Chaparral
THRIVE Market
Primary Goals
Adverse Childhood Event (ACE)2 ACEs are potentially traumatic events that occur in childhood (0-17 years), such as experiencing violence, abuse, neglect, witnessing violence in the home, or having a family member attempt or die by suicide.
How do ACEs influence health and opportunity? An increasing amount of evidence suggests that toxic stress in children can affect the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems at their most basic levels, and that such exposures can even change the physical structure of DNA. Attention, impulsive behavior, decision-making, learning, emotion, and stress response are all affected by toxic stress changes in the brain.
Children growing up in these circumstances generally struggle to study and complete schooling in the absence of things that can avoid or lessen toxic stress. They are more likely to be involved in crime and violence, to use alcohol or drugs, and to engage in other health-risk behaviors (e.g., early initiation of sexual activity, unprotected sex, and suicide attempts). They are susceptible to disease, illness, and mental health challenges over their lifetime.
Children who are exposed to toxic stress as they grow up may struggle to build healthy and secure relationships. They may also have unstable work history as adults and struggle with finances, family, employment, and depression throughout their lives, with the consequences being passed down to their children.
